YPSILANTI, Mich. – While walking around the Eastern Michigan University campus it becomes very evident that 20-year-old Demarius Reed was loved by so many people. He was a standout both on and off the football field.
"It was very disheartening, I mean, it really hit home to not only myself but to a lot of students on campus today," said one student.
Students are mourning the loss of Reed who was affectionately known as "Deuce." Who wore No. 2 on the football team. On the field, he meant business.
The junior from Chicago was a starting wide receiver. He had 15 catches so far this season for a total of 185 yards and a touchdown. His teammates called him a captain who they looked up to.
His father says Demarius had big dreams of going to the National Football League.
"He wanted to do for himself. He had aspirations," said Carl Reed.
On Friday morning, Reed was found shot several times by a robber. Police say he was found dead in the hallway of his off-campus apartment by his roommate.
"Really a sad situation and a tragedy for a young man to go off to school, pursue education, pursue athletics and to wind up ... it seems like executed almost," said Derrick Davis.
Students and university leaders gathered Friday night to honor the student-athlete. For so many, the loss is unbelievable.
Reed leaves a lasting legacy. At EMU, he always will be remembered as a playmaker and a difference maker.
"Very respectable person. There is nothing negative you could say in his light, there is nothing negative you could say about him," said Davis.
There will be a special dedication to Reed on Saturday during Eastern Michigan's football game.
Meanwhile, the investigation continues into his murder.
