DETROIT -

As part of Local 4's coverage of NBC News' Education Nation, we are attempting to collect new and gently used books for the United Way for Southeastern Michigan.

The United Way will repurpose the books in its Early Learning Communities, it's high school and hospital partners in the community.

Our thought was to have students pay it forward by donating books they are no longer using.

From March 18 through March 28, we will be traveling across metro Detroit to different school districts to collect the books donated by the students.

As of Monday March 25, students from across metro Detroit have helped Local 4 collect more than 35,000 books for the United Way.

On March 28, we will deliver the books to the United Way.

The bus will stop in the following school districts:

Grosse Pointe Public Schools, Center Line Public Schools, Bloomfield Hills Schools, Fraser Public Schools, Dearborn Public Schools, West Bloomfield Schools, Northville Public Schools and Utica Community Schools.
