Elderly woman shot on Detroit's eastside

Woman is recovering after being shot by stranger

DETROIT – An 87-year-old woman was shot Thursday evening while sitting on her porch on Detroit’s east side.

Elizabeth Hurd is a great grandmother and has lived in Detroit her whole life.

I’m sitting on my porch in my chair like I do all the time,” Hurd said. “Sit on my porch and go to church on Sundays.”

Hurd was hit by a stray bullet in her arm, just inches from her head.

“The bullet hit me,” Hurd said. “No argument. None of that. They were just standing over the other side of the house.”

Family members say the shot came from a man talking to a group of young men on the sidewalk in front of the house next door.

Hurd said that in all of her decades in Detroit, nothing like this has ever happened to her before.

“I am a church person. Church on Sundays and I serve God. Never been around none of this,” Hurd said.

Police are still investigating the shooting but say they have a good idea who the person responsible is.

Hurd says she plans on attending church this Sunday.
