YPSILANTI, Mich. – Several Eastern Michigan University students staged a peaceful protest on campus Wednesday morning inside the EMU student center.
Students were upset over a number of incidents involving racist graffiti showing up on campus buildings.
One student was live streaming the entire protest.
Currently, University police are searching for those responsible for vandalizing the east side of Ford Hall at Eastern Michigan University with racist graffiti.
Police removed the graffiti which targeted the African American community. The investigation is ongoing.
EMU is working with African-American campus leaders and planning a forum to keep the campus community informed about the investigations.
University president Jim Smith said he is deeply disturbed by the actions on campus.
“There is no place on our campus for these kinds of hateful actions,” Smith said. “I am personally angry and saddened and want to convey my strong sense of resolve in finding out who is behind these incidents.”
According to Smith, authorities responded to several tips in September regarding a number of related incidents. A $5,000 reward was offered to anyone with information and the award has doubled in the wake of the latest reports.

Smith said the incidents run counter to the values and mission of the University and will work to reflect this through his actions as he strives to bring the campus together to confront hate and racism.

A resource page containing updates on the investigation, newly created forums and information about campus resources, such as counseling, will be available.
Students are also planning to hold a similar rally and peaceful protest outside Ford Hall Wednesday at 11 a.m.
