Engine 40's back-to-school event hands out backpacks, school supplies

Back-to-School party in Detroit prepares children to return to class after summer break.

DETROIT – Mayor Mike Duggan and Detroit firefighters were on Detroit's west side Saturday giving away hundreds of backpacks.

The Engine 40 Foundation teamed up with Detroit firefighters and Councilwoman Janee Ayers to host its 17th annual back-to-school event.

The event has supported thousands of students over the years.

The Back to School Backpack Giveaway featured horseback riding, rock climbing, face painting and food, as well as dental checkups and haircuts to prepare for this first week.

Students left the event with a backpack filled with school supplies.
