DETROIT - The push for Detroit to host the 2014 X Games all comes down to this. Tomorrow morning, ESPN will announce who will be hosting the event.
The four finalists are Detroit, Austin, Charlotte and Chicago.
On the X Games Facebook page, they asked their audience "Where do you want to see X Games in 2014?". At this time, Detroit leads the voting with over 23,000 votes, and Austin is second with just over 15,000 votes. The votes aren't the deciding factor in the decision, but it's clear that fans are pushing for a Detroit X Games.
The event, which has been held in Southern California for more than 10 years, is searching for a new destination city staring next year.
The X Games are global extreme sports competitions, first organized by ESPN in 1995. The Summer X Games include skateboarding, car racing, motocross and BMX events.
Last October, the organization took bids from cities looking to host the games. During an Olympic-style bidding process groups representing each city sent in proposals as the contract between the X Games and AEG, was set to expire after the 2013 X Games in Los Angeles.
"The X Games have grown significantly and has been enjoyed by millions of fans over the past 10 years in Los Angeles," said Scott Guglielmino, senior vice president, programming and X Games said in a statement. "Our partners AEG and the city of Los Angeles have been instrumental in our success. As we embark on a year of significant global expansion and transformation for X Games in 2013, we are excited about the potential each of these cities bring, and look forward to identifying our next host city for the X Games."
According to the X Games to Detroit website, their mission is to create a global platform to communicate the story of Detroit by constructing a media partnership and brand alignment with ESPN's X Games.21003040
