Farmington Hills woman won't be charged in son's fatal shooting

Woman told police she acted in self-defense when 24-year-old son forced his way into her home

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – A Farmington Hills woman will not face charges in connection to the deadly shooting of her 24-year-old son Oct. 28 at her home in the Independence Green Apartments complex, the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office announced Monday.

Demitrius Deneze-Raymond Taylor, who lived in Detroit, was shot to death just before 2 a.m. Oct. 28 in the apartment off Grand River Avenue near Halsted Road. Police said the mother told officers she shot her son in self-defense after he forced his way into her apartment. The mother has been cooperating with police. She does have a registered pistol in her name.

"After reviewing the case, the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office will not be issuing any charges," the Prosecutor's Office said in a statement issued Monday afternoon.

Farmington Hills Police Chief Chuck Nebus said a 911 call indicated the woman's son had broken into her apartment.

"She reported that her son had broken into her apartment and that there had been a shooting," said Nebus.

Nebus said the mother claims her son approached her with a piece of cement or concrete. She felt threatened. The family has had a history of problems.

"We did respond earlier in the evening at 8:47 p.m. ... there was a report of family trouble," said Nebus.
