Police Chief Mary Sclabassi said the family of five was either evicted or chose to leave their Dearborn Heights home the night before and had been looking to stay at the hotel.

Sclabassi said the girl's parents told police that they lost track of her when they went inside to check in. An Amber Alert was issued for the 8-year-old, but the girl was found sleeping and "fortunately unaware" of the confusion back in the family's Dearborn Heights home, Sclabassi said.

The parents could be charged with child neglect.
