DETROIT – Two people died Monday in a house fire on Detroit's west side.

A 67-year-old man and his 42-year-old stepson were found unresponsive in a bedroom of a home on Fielding Street just after 6 a.m. They were rushed to Detroit Receiving Hospital.

Family members and friends at the scene said the two didn't make it. They are identifying them as 67-year-old Bobby Cross and 42-year-old Darryl Simms, who was the son of Cross' live-in and longtime girlfriend.

She had just left for work when the fire broke out.

One witness Local 4 talked with said he and some other neighbors grabbed garden hoses and tried to put the fire out, but there was no way they could get in.

"The house was fully involved in 10 or 15 minutes," the witness said.

Arson investigators are combing the scene, but a cause of the fire has not yet been released.
