Fire at Canadian food processing center visible for miles in Detroit

No injuries reported at Bonduelle Food Service plant

TECUMSEH, Ontario – A massive fire in Canada sent billowing smoke into the air Friday morning that could be seen for miles in Detroit.

The fire at a plant for Bonduelle Food, which processes canned and frozen vegetables, was reported about 3 a.m.

The building was previously owned by Green Giant.

Evacuations:

Tecumseh Fire and Rescue Services issued an evacuation notice for residents and businesses in the vicinity of the Bonduelle Plant, located at the corner of Tecumseh Road and Lacasse Boulevard in Tecumseh, Ontario.

  • Residents between County Road 22 to the south, St. Thomas Road to the north, Lesperance Road  west to Manning Road are to evacuate the area.  
  • Tecumseh Arena, 12021 McNorton Street, is available to host residents, as well as St. Joseph's School located on Clover and McHugh, Windsor.

Residents outside of the noted area are encouraged to stay indoors and to keep doors and windows closed. The Ontario Provincial Police are advising motorists to adhere to the road closures and to avoid the area.

No injuries have been reported. There was no immediate word on what started the fire.
