DETROIT – Dozens of people were forced from their home in a Detroit apartment building early Friday morning because of a fire.
The two-alarm fire broke out just before 7 a.m. at the Selden Manor apartments at Selden and 3rd streets.
Heavy smoke could be seen coming from the building for miles.
Resident Jamie Smith was in one of the apartments with her mother and two young cousins when it filled with smoke.
"We tried to run out the front door, but it was too much and it was too hot," Smith said. "At first we were yelling out the window, ‘We're trapped, we're trapped.' There was no way for us to get out. They (the fire department) put the ladder up there and helped us out."
Latrese Anderson lives on the fourth floor of the 91-year-old building.
"When we opened the door there was so much smoke we had to damn near crawl on the floor to get out," Anderson said.
No one was hurt, but the Red Cross is now helping the displaced residents.
Fire Chief John King said the fire was contained to one unit but could not confirm yet what caused it.
