Fire damages west Detroit apartment building

Family affected receives help from Red Cross

DETROIT – People living in a Dexter apartment building had to evacuate after a fire started on the top floor of the building Sunday.

Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to other apartments.

The occupant of the unit that caught fire said the damage is preventing her from getting back inside.

"(There's) water damage. (It's) burnt up," Yolanda Parker said.

Arson crews said they are investigating how the fire began.

The family who lives in the unit is receiving assistance from the Red Cross.
