LINCOLN PARK, Mich. – An apartment building was destroyed by fire Friday morning on Goddard Road near Fort Street in Lincoln Park.
The good news is everyone made it out of the building safely, according to the fire chief. Firefighters are now trying to figure out what caused the large fire.
It started just after 3 a.m. Firefighters rushed to the building, entered and began evacuating people from the building immediately. The roof had collapsed as the flames reached 20 feet into the air.
There are a total of eight apartment units at the two-story building. All of the units were destroyed.
Firefighters had to battle the bitter cold temperatures which caused some water challenges.
"It always hinders the operations, with the water everywhere it's getting slippery. So we're throwing some salt out best we can and try to stay warm," said Chief Steve Martin.
Residents had to rush out as quickly as possible. Many had to leave everything behind.
"I grabbed the keys to the house instead of the keys to my car and we ran out, and we've been out here since. I just watched my apartment go up in flames, and we lost everything," said a resident who goes by Ms. T.
She made it out safely with her son.
One resident was going door-to-door helping others get out to safety.
