4 hospitalized after fire at assisted-living home in Farmington Hills

Baptist Manor in Farmington Hills evacuated due to fire

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – Four people were hospitalized Wednesday after a fire ripped through at an assisted-living center in Farmington Hills and forced seniors out of their homes, officials said.

The building off of 13 Mile Road between Middlebelt and Orchard Lake roads was evacuated because of the fire, officials said.

Police said the four victims suffered from smoke inhalation.

Farmington Hills firefighters battled the flames for hours, while police officers went into the complex to get residents outside.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but many residents said they think they know how it started.

"(A woman) lit up a cigarette and boom," a man said.

Residents said cigarettes and oxygen tanks have resulted in fires before at the complex.

Management said residents displaced by the fire will be housed elsewhere in the complex.
