Residents escape Woodhaven apartment fire

No serious injuries reported

WOODHAVEN, Mich. – Residents of an apartment complex in Woodhaven escaped a blaze Wednesday with the help of firefighters and neighbors.

The Southpointe Square Apartments on 22520 West Road erupted into flames around 3 p.m.

Neighbors helped disabled residents escape the fire before firefighters arrived on the scene.

Joseph Sadler was trapped inside. His wife, Rilla Sadler, helped Joseph into his wheelchair, but they got stuck in the hallway.

Neighbors, who had escaped the fire to safety, saw the Sadlers in trouble and ran back into the fire.

Woodhaven Fire Chief Mike Clark says firefighters rescued two other people and credits neighbors for their quick thinking.

There were no serious injuries. Two people were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Eight families were affected by the fire.
