Former Detroit Tigers pitcher Evan Reed pleads no contest to assault

DETROIT – Former Detroit Tigers pitcher Evan Reed has pleaded no contest to misdemeanor aggravated assault and is expected to be placed on probation to resolve a sexual assault case.

Reed entered the plea Friday in Detroit in an agreement with prosecutors. A no contest plea isn't an admission of guilt but is treated as such for sentencing. Two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct were dropped.

In March 2014, Reed was accused of sexually assaulting a 45-year-old woman inside a room at the MotorCity Casino Hotel in Detroit.

The woman told police she met Reed at the 5th Avenue bar in Royal Oak and didn't remember leaving the bar, but woke up with Reed in the hotel room the next morning.

Reed said the sex was consensual. After a hearing in August, Wayne Circuit Judge Kenneth King dismissed the sexual assault charges against Reed.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy appealed -- and the charges were reinstated.

Reed is scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 7.
