Free summer activities for families in metro Detroit

DETROIT – Many local parks in metro Detroit host free camps and activities throughout the summer months to help kids learn while they enjoy the great outdoors.

Campers can go on scavenger hunts, learn about wildlife and even enjoy entertainment nights with the whole family.

Heritage Park in Farmington Hills has a nature center day camp with a long list of activities during the summer months.

Kevin Beahon, one of their nature center programmers says, rain or shine, the fan favorite is definitely the nature walks.

"It's a great opportunity to get the kids to really get out and explore in their surrounding environments, even in their own backyards," Beahon said.

As soon as campers hear that it's time to play "park ranger" they quickly line up and head outside.

The educational game allows kids to use their imagination and their knowledge of animals in order to win the game.

"There's really a chance to get some exercise, get some sunshine just to enjoy the beauty of nature," Beahon said.

Local 4 also went to parks hosting events for the whole family. West Bloomfield Township's Marshbank Park has a free concert night once a week with live entertainment.

Meagan Kurnat, the marketing coordinator for West Bloomfield Parks and Recreation, says all you need to bring is a blanket and they'll provide the rest.

"We try to have giveaways at all of our concerts.  So we have toy footballs, beach balls, lays and we also do raffle prizes that we announce at the end of the concert," Kurnat said.
