Frost advisory continues through night, but nice day on tap Thursday

DETROIT – Today's cloud cover was certainly much more stubborn than expected, but it will break up this evening and clear out completely.

The ensuing clear skies, light wind, cold air mass, and very dry air are the four ingredients we need for efficient radiational cooling, which means that temperatures will fall to their full potential.

Tonight, that means lows in the low to mid 30s (1° to 2° Celsius for you Canadians) in the coldest suburbs, to near 40° (4°) near Detroit. Accordingly, The National Weather Service has issued a Frost Advisory tonight for all counties except Wayne and Monroe.

Mostly sunny Thursday morning, with a gradual increase of high, thin cirrus clouds during the afternoon. Highs in the mid 60s (18° Celsius) inland, and potentially only near 60° (15° Celsius) near the big lakes. Southeast wind at 5 to 10 mph.

Increasing and thickening clouds Thursday night, with rain likely late at night. Lows in the low 50s.

Rain will make for a slow rush hour Friday morning, but the rain will end and the afternoon should be dry. We might even see some breaks of sun develop late in the day. Highs in the mid 70s.

Mostly cloudy Friday night, with lows in the upper 50s.

The weekend continues to be an exceptionally tricky forecast. I'm pretty confident about the large scale weather pattern changes, but the computer models still haven't been able to agree upon the smaller scale features that, in this meteorological set-up, will trigger thunderstorms. There will probably be a period of showers and thunderstorms both days, but I don't think it'll rain all day either day. Hopefully, the rain will hold off for the Race For The Cure Saturday morning…many thousands of you will be downtown for that. Plus, I'll be playing on the Detroit Tigers' alumni softball team in a charity game at Belleville High School at noon Saturday. If you want to play on the team that we'll be playing against, or if you just want more details about the game, check it out at bit.ly/1FeBWiu . Hope to see you there…and I'm told that the Tiger alumni will be very accessible for autographs and photos!

My best advice to you this weekend is to frequently check the radar on the FREE Local4Casters weather app…just search under WDIV and you'll see it right there. Also, if you haven't already, follow me on Twitter at @PGLocal4, as I tweet updates and radar images. At least highs won't be bad this weekend…upper 70s on Saturday and potentially low 80s on Sunday. Overnight lows in the upper 50s to low 60s.

A cold front comes barreling through on Monday with a round of organized thunderstorms, but we'll hopefully clear out by late afternoon and salvage our evening plans. Highs in the low 80s.

Partly cloudy Monday night, with lows in the upper 40s.

Partly cloudy and much cooler on Tuesday, with highs in the low 60s.

Becoming mostly clear Tuesday night, with lows in the low 40s.

Mostly sunny on Wednesday, with highs in the mid 60s.
