Garbage truck driver critical after crash on I-94 in Romulus

Police: Driver fatigue suspected in crash near Wayne Road

ROMULUS, Mich. – The driver of a garbage truck is currently in critical condition after crashing into a semi-truck Monday afternoon in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 94 near Wayne Road.

Officers with the Romulus Police Department arrived after 3:40 p.m. Monday to the accident at EB I-94 east of South Wayne Road, after the driver -- a 43-year-old Inkster man -- was reported to be pinned in his cab and bleeding.

Rescue crews tried to use a tow truck to pull the two trucks apart. A medical helicopter arrived on the highway to rush the pinned driver to the hospital once he was freed.

The man was airlifted from the scene and was listed in critical condition Monday night, police said. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured.

The cause of the accident is under investigation. Police said alcohol and drugs did not appear to be factors in the crash; however, driver fatigue is suspected.
