Gas leak has Farmington Hills neighbors on edge, frustrated

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – Residents on Greythorne Trail in Farmington Hills have been reporting the smell of natural gas for weeks.

Consumers Energy crews pushed probes into the ground to inspect the apparent problem. Neighbors say the utility workers deemed it an insignificant hole in a gas line T-joint and told them not to worry.

However, neighbors such as Mike Kozara are worrying anyway.

"The things I've heard about gas leaks in the past, I mean, it sounds like something they should be taking care of right away," he said.

The neighborhood took to the Internet. They posted dozens of remarks, many describing how frustrated they are with the lack of action when the smell of gas is so obvious.

On Friday, the neighbors reached to Local 4, and we called Consumers.

Consumers knows very well about the leak as its crews have been out four or five times in recent weeks. They classified it as a 90-day action, meaning the location and amount of gas leaking is not considered serious.

But a concerned neighbor called Consumers about the gas smell three days ago and the new complaint apparently sat on a desk when it shouldn't have.

A Consumers Energy spokeswoman admits the report should have been passed on and offers no excuses about the lack of communication. She assured Local 4 the leak will be fixed early next week.

"I think this is an emergency type situation. I think they should be out here taking care of the issue now," said Kozara.
