Gas prices jump in metro Detroit

DETROIT – If you had to do a double take at the price at the pump lately you're not alone.

Lauren Stovall almost shifted into reverse.

"I guess I didn't realize in the past couple of days it has went up. What are you going to do? I drive for my job," said Lauren Stovall.

Drivers in Detroit are paying on average $3.91 a gallon for regular gas, according to AAA Michigan. That's up by seven cents from last week.

Stephanie is saving cash by leaving her car in park as much as possible.

"I have been working from home a lot to help off set the prices," she said.

So what's fueling the hike?

The demand over Memorial Day weekend, rising wholesale gasoline prices and simmering geopolitical tensions abroad.

The last time Rodney Lubinski fueled up, the average price of gas was about $1.11.

"I haven't driven a car in 20 years because of them. They just seem way to ridiculous," Lubinski said.

If you want to find that deal, you'll have to take a time machine back to the early 90s.

"Just keeps me further and further from wanting to buy a car," he said.

Lubinski said he puts in a lot of miles on foot in between bus rides.

AAA also says the statewide average is up about 1 cent from this time last year. Of the cities it surveys, the auto club says the cheapest price for self-serve unleaded fuel is in the Marquette area, where it's about $3.75 a gallon. The highest average is in the Jackson, Saginaw, Bay City, Midland and Traverse City areas at about $3.94 a gallon.
