DETROIT – On Monday, the inner-city teen girls of the Rhonda Walker Foundation took their day off from school to learn about careers in technology at the Compuware headquarters in downtown Detroit.
"Technology is a career field I'm interested in studying in college, so I'm really excited to learn about all the opportunities." Says ninth-grader Jazzmin Jones.
The ladies of the Michigan Council of Women in Technology (MCWT) took their day off from work in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and made it a day of service for dozens of teens in the Detroit Public School system to teach them about the vast opportunities in the technology career field.
Kim Wasilewski from General Motors is leading a workshop on IT in the automotive industry and says, "I do think of it as a day of service and I'm really fortunate that the girls chose their holiday to be with us today."
Ellen Bourke, the tech career fairs lead organizer and a member of the MCWT, is on a mission to encourage young women to explore careers in technology.
"It's very important because there are many scholarships and opportunities available that people don't even realize, it's a great career for women and currently we are vastly under represented in the field," she said.
The day includeed inter active workshops on IT in the automotive industry, healthcare, social media and digital media along with testimonials from high achieving local women in the IT field.
