Gov. Rick Snyder, Detroit Mayor Dave Bing to announce AmeriCorps public safety initiative
Event to be held Monday in Osborn High School's library
Gov. Rick Snyder and Detroit Mayor Dave Bing have announced a new public safety initiative.
The announcement of the AmeriCorps Urban Safety Corps program was Monday in Osborn High School's library.
The program, which uses 36 AmeriCorps members, is aimed at reducing crime in Detroit -- specifically in targeted areas: East English Village, Clark Elementary, Bates, Bagley Elementary, Bethune, Gompers Elementary, Cody, Harms Elementary, Neinas Elementary, and Osborn.
The Urban Safety Corps is operated by Wayne State University and has been active in parts of Detroit for three years.
It uses a crime-mapping system and relies on collaboration between residents, neighborhood nonprofits, faith-based organizations, law enforcement, existing neighborhood associations and block clubs to improve public safety.
