Grandfather wakes up to home invasion on Detroit's east side

Cameras were ripped off front porch

DETROIT – Police are investigating a home invasion in which it appears the security system was deactivated and the grandfather woke to thieves making off with the TV.

The homeowner, a Detroit mother, keeps tabs on the inside and outside of her home with security cameras.

“They came in through the kitchen window which is unsecured,” the local mother said. She asked not to be identified. “But before that, they ripped off the camera I had attached to the front porch.”

The home invasion took place in the 3000 block of Montclair Street on Detroit’s east side Thursday at about 4:30 a.m. The woman’s father and her 10-year-old son were in the home at the time.

“I sent my grandson to bed around 10 p.m. last night because normally he’ll hang out with me on the couch,” the grandfather said. “But I decided to send him to his room and I’m grateful I did.”

Detroit Police believe three men entered through the kitchen window and stole the 60 inch flat screen.

“I had woken up and noticed someone on the floor and I thought it was my grandson, so I asked ‘what are you doing?’ The guy answered me and said ‘just getting my game,’” the grandfather said. “That’s when I knew that wasn’t my grandson.”

When the 47-year-old grandfather attempted to get off the couch but one of the robbers showed a gun and told him to lie back down and turn his head.

“I wasn’t scared for my safety. I just wanted to get to my grandson. That’s why I did what I was told,” he said.
Detroit police were called to the home after the thieves fled with the TV.

Two streets over, in the 3000 block of Fairview Street, an attempted break-in took place less than our later at another home. That homeowner told Local 4 he also had a security camera on his porch that was unplugged but his dog scared the robbers away before anything else happened.
