Hamtramck City Manager fired

Bill Cooper let go in wake of city's financial woes

HAMTRAMCK, Mich. – The Hamtramck City Council voted Wednesday night to fire city manager Bill Cooper.

The Mayor of Hamtramck cast the deciding vote.

Cooper was let go following a report he published Tuesday warning city council members the city's finances had deteriorated so badly he was proposing city employees work without pay one day a month.

He reported reduced tax payments by American Axle by $600,000 per year and the General Motors Pole Town plant of $1 million a year and declining property tax income.

In the end it added up to a near $2 million budget shortfall.
