DETROIT – City of Detroit active employees can now enroll for new insurance plan options that take effect on Jan. 1, 2014.
Retired Employees who are Medicare eligible will be able to enroll in new Medicare Advantage health insurance plans offered by the city that also takes effect at the same time, Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr said.

"This new health benefits structure allows the City to provide quality health care to its active employees. It also will provide retirees who are enrolled in Medicare with supplemental coverage, and it will help younger retirees who are not yet Medicare eligible to afford coverage until they are old enough to transition to Medicare," Orr said in a news release. "Our goal has always been to provide quality coverage that the City can reasonably afford, and we have done that."
Retired employees who are not Medicare eligible should now begin the process of obtaining health insurance on their own, including from their state's health care exchange or, if they or their spouses are employed, from their current employers. Detailed information on the steps needed for retirees to obtain health insurance is set forth in the booklets that the City mailed to employees and retirees this week.
