NOVI, Mich. - One home was destroyed and another was heavily damaged by a fire in Novi, but firefighters prevented it from turning out much worse.
The fire happened off Walled Lake around 7 a.m. Saturday.
Firefighters had a lot of obstacles to overcome to save other houses nearby.
It's usually a quiet community. Saturday morning, though, was anything but.
Roger Palmer was asleep in the home where the fire began. He, his wife and their dog got out safely.
Wind off the lake meant the flames easily jumped to the mere 4 feet to the home next door, which was undergoing a major renovation. A woman was pouring nearly $1 million into it after she became a widow.
Fire investigators are still looking into what started the fire, but they know what challenges they were faced with.
Aside from the homes being so close together, there are power and utility lines all over. Then they had to spend hours making sure the fire was completely out.
One more obstacle for firefighters was a live electrical wire that fell onto a fire hose, forcing them to stop, run another line and continue fighting the fire.
