Humane Society seeks owners for pets rescued from hoarders

Huron Valley Humane Society rescued 45 dogs from 1 home, 18 from another

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Huron Valley Humane Society is looking for people to adopt dozens of pets rescued from the homes of two different hoarders.

"They were living in piles of feces," said Tanya Hilgendorf, the executive director of the Huron Valley Humane Society. "Some in sheds. Some were in cages and some were in the house, but overall unsanitary conditions."

The Humane Society rescued 45 dogs from one home in Washtenaw County and 18 cats from another home.

"The owner of the dogs was an elderly lady and wasn't able to care for the animals. She was being taken to an elderly home," said Animal Cruelty investigator Matt Scheacher.

It's a different story for the owner of the cats

"That gentlemen doesn't have an excuse. He's a hoarder of cats and must be prosecuted for neglect," said Scheacher.

The shelter already takes in 20 to 30 animals a day, so having the influx of cats and dogs has put a strain on the staff and space.

They are hoping people will step up and give these animals a home.

"They have no experience with the world. They're adorable and sweet dogs. Some of them are going up for adoption right away. Some need more time and care," said Hilgendorf.
