I-94 closure to cause challenging weekend for getting around Detroit

MDOT hopes to have section of I-94 reopened Monday morning

DETROIT – It's been a rough week on metro Detroit roadways. There was a tanker fire that shut down I-94 and an accident that injured two Michigan State Police troopers shut down I-75.

If you need to get in and around Detroit this weekend, it's going to be challenging. Major closures are planned on I-94.

The work continued further down I-94 in the eastbound lanes where they remain shut down between the Southfield Freeway to Livernois because of a tanker truck that exploded in the eastbound lanes Wednesday.

Nick Angelosanto watched it all unfold right in front of him in his brand new Mustang.

"I was driving next to a black truck," said Angelosanto. "Looked like the end of the world."

Everybody involved in the wreck, which is still under investigation, managed to walk away. The freeway, however, is hopelessly damaged.

Roughly 150 feet of pavement in the eastbound lanes has to be ripped out, cleaned up and repaved. Work started Wednesday night and will continue through the weekend.

MDOT is hoping to have the section of I-94 reopened Monday morning. Same with the I-94 closure between the Lodge and I-75; it's scheduled to be up and running by 5 a.m. Monday.

Angelosanto for his part has zero interest in driving anywhere this weekend after what he's been through. He said he plans on getting plenty of sleep.

"It'll be nice to get some rest this weekend," Angelosanto said.
