MDOT: Freeway could reopen by September 30

LIVONIA, Mich. This is the news drivers who have been detoured for months by the Interstate 96 closure have been hoping to hear.

The Michigan Department of Transportation says the project is ahead of schedule and as a result, I-96 in Livonia and Redford Township is expected to reopen to traffic on Sep. 30.

The 7-mile stretch closed back in April so that MDOT could do a massive makeover of the heavily traveled highway.

It wasn't scheduled to reopen until mid-October, but things are moving along faster than anticipated.
