Inkster police beating victim: Officer's dismissal is good first step

Inkster police officer now fired from department

INKSTER, Mich. – Floyd Dent, in his first interview following the firing of Inkster police officer William Melendez, said the dismissal is a good first step.

"I wanted that to happen because of what he did to me. I was thrilled when I heard about it a couple days ago," said Dent. "He's being held accountable for what he's done to me."

Officer Melendez is shown on police dashcam video throwing 16 punches to Dent's head following a traffic stop. Now, he is set to be fired from the force.

Inkster City Councilmember Michael Canty issued a brief statement:

"(Melendez) is no longer an employee of the city of Inkster. Any further explanation or discussion should be referred to Allen Brothers, the council's law representation."

Melendez issued his own statement saying:

"I look forward to my opportunity to speak openly about this case. At this time my attorney has advised me not to comment due to ongoing open investigations."

Dent and his attorney Greg Rohl say officer Melendez should be charged criminally for his actions while the officers who kicked and used a Taser on Dent should face consequences, too.

"There were not just officers who were participants in the abuse process, but also those who just sat back and watched it happen, who in my mind are just as guilty," said Rohl. "And those who did nothing afterward. This was never reported by any officer as being excessive. The only reason it's here today is because of the video."

Dent said he has been contacted by officers who are investigating this case and has been cooperating.

The Wayne County prosecutor is still deciding whether to drop cocaine possession charges against Dent.
