Innocent 13-year-old boy shot in Detroit

Boy shot with high-powered rifle, police say

DETROIT – Police and the family of a 13-year-old boy who was shot while walking with a group of friends are urging witnesses to come forward.

The shooting happened around 4:25 p.m. Sunday near Joy and Terry. Police said a vehicle pulled up and someone armed with a high-powered rifle opened fire, hitting 13-year-old Tyrone Gladden.

"They said he was dead but they revived him, so he's real strong," said Temeka Gladden, his sister.

Family members said Tyrone is the youngest of 11 children and is a very good kid who didn't deserve this.

"It's sad. He's 13. He's a baby. It shouldn't happen like that," said Charlene Gladden, his oldest sister.

"I don't know. I'm just lost on words. He's not out here trying to do the wrong things and do the wrong things for the wrong reasons. He's out here trying to do the right things for the right reasons, but was just at the wrong place at the wrong time," said Temeka.

Chief James Craig with the Detroit Police Department said Tyrone was not targeted and police are doing what they can to find the person who fired the shots.

"It's a cowardly act. It continues to be a cowardly act and these cowards shot a child and I'm not happy about it and want to bring some closure," said Craig.

Craig said they are hoping to speak with the two other minors who were walking with Tyrone at the time of the shooting, but haven't been able to find them.

Family members are hoping they come forward along with other witnesses.

"It's eyewitnesses out there. They're out there. Everybody knows this and it's just like -- speak up," said Temeka.

"Come to our house, anything. Call us, text us, email us, Facebook us, anything, we would like that," said Charlene.

The family has created a GoFundMe page to help with expenses.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Detroit Police Department.
