DETROIT -

Detroit Fire Department headquarters 2 The Detroit Fire Department's headquarters is a historic building erected in 1929 at the corner of Washington Boulevard and Larned Street in what is now the Detroit Financial District.

Now, for the first time in its long history, the building is officially on the market. All 62,000 square feet could be yours.

"It's an important architectual building," said Jeff Hillman, a real estate specialist.

There already is talk about investors hoping to snatch up the historic building to convert the space into lofts. However, it's important to remember the building is in a historic district. Any big changes will have to be approved.

"Its proximity to Cobo (Center) and its location being close enough to Campus Martius, it should generate a significant interest," Hillman said.

Melanie Markowicz, of Preservation Detroit, said since the Fire Department's Lafayette building was bulldozed a team of concerned citizens scrambled to make sure the headquarters would be spared.

"This is quite a gem that we should celebrate and safeguard," said Markowicz. "It has legal protections under the Detroit government for any exterior alterations, changes, additions and demolitions."

Local 4 is told the asking price will start at $1.1 million. Hillman said the sale will likely be a bidding process due to the interest in the building.
