DETROIT -

Kwame Kilpatrick is out of prison and in the hospital for knee surgery.

The Local 4 Defenders have learned the ex-Detroit mayor is getting knee surgery after slipping on his way to prison. He has been waiting for a donated tendon for the procedure.

Kilpatrick says he is fearful about having to rehabilitate the knee while behind bars. He has asked a judge to allow him out on bond, but has been denied more than once.

So, he will return to prison after the surgery where he will wait to be sentenced on federal corruption charges.
