DETROIT -

James Craig begins his first day as Detroit police chief Monday. A $225,000 salary for Detroit's new police chief is turning heads in the struggling city.

Council member Ken Cockrel Junior, a former mayor, said that James Craig's salary is "absolutely insane," even if crime is a problem.

Bill Nowling, a spokesman for Detroit's emergency manager, says the pay range was increased 60 percent during the search for a new chief to make the city competitive with other cities.

Craig, a Detroit native, will have a two-year contract. Nowling says he was paid more than $150,000 as police chief in Cincinnati, a much smaller city.

Council member JoAnn Watson is defending Craig's pay, saying it's a unique job. Meanwhile, police are moving into a new headquarters for the first time in 90 years.
