Jim Harbaugh talks politics, President Trump

'All Americans should care about justice,' Harbaugh tells Politico

About a month ago, Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh drifted into politics, which can be dangerous territory.

He tweeted about the Legal Services Corporation, which funds civil legal aid for low-income Americans.

Harbaugh, it turns out, is passionate about the LSC. His tweet from Feb. 28 reads, "I hope reports that White House trying to defund Legal Services Corp aren't true. LSC is CRUCIAL to making justice system fair. #LSCmatters"

If you have the impression Harbaugh is a man of few words, you'll be surprised by his conversation with the online news source Politico.

"Some people say 'Why is a football coach concerned?' I explained I'm an American first and all Americans should care about justice," Harbaugh told Politico Magazine.

When asked what he would say if he had two minutes with President Donald Trump, Harbaugh responded, "What I said in the tweet. I hope the rumors that LSC is being reduced or defunded are not true. And please study this and realize that this is a very important issue."

Harbaugh was asked if there was anything in his contract with the University of Michigan that prevents him from weighing in on political or social media.

"I work at a public university," he said. "I think it's recommended to be apolitical. But this is an American issue and I'm allowed to be an American."
