Judge to decide if Walled Lake shooting case will go forward

WALLED LAKE, Mich. - A judge is expected to decide Wednesday if a Walled Lake man is competent to stand trial on an murder charge for allegedly shooting his neighbor during a dispute over dogs.

Charles Jacob Simkins, a former Marine, is accused of killing Edwin Criswell in December outside their homes on Sigma Road. Simkins was allegedly upset over Criswell's dogs, including a beagle who had been loose in the neighborhood.

Neighbors told Local 4 they've called police before because of the dogs' barking.

Simkins is charged with open murder and possession of a firearm during a felony.

Simkins is a veteran of the Iraq war, but had been dishonorably discharged from the Marines.
