Michigan businesses will no longer have to kick around the personal property tax as voters overwhelmingly supported Proposition 1 to repeal the tax. Nearly 70% of voters approved the ballot measure.
Tuesday’s primary election provided a look at Michigan’s next Congressional delegation as Rep. John Conyers defeated challenger Horace Sheffield in a Democratic primary landslide for the 13th Congressional district.
In Oakland County, challenger David Trott thumped Rep. Kerry Bentivolio for the 11th Congressional district by a nearly 2-to-1 margin. Trott will face Democratic challenger Bobby McKenzie, who won in a close race against Dr. Anil Kumar, in the general election.
Debbie Dingell also cruised to victory in the Democratic primary to replace her husband John Dingell for the 12th Congressional district, who is retiring after more than a half-century in Congress.
Meanwhile, the 14th District Democratic primary was a much closer race. However, it appears Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence has beat out State Rep. Rudy Hobbs by about 2,500 votes.
Former Wayne County Sheriff and Detroit Police Chief Warren Evans will likely be the next Wayne County Executive after winning the Democratic primary, which is tantamount to winning the office in the heavily Democratic county. Bob Ficano, the current executive, will be out a job come January after receiving only 6% of the vote.
Voters in Wayne, Macomb & Oakland counties approved a property tax increase to help SMART Transportation Systems continue operating.
Hazel Park and Oak Park both saw measures pass that decriminalizes marijuana.
