'Large quantity' of marijuana plants found in Michigan after car rams into storage facility

Police find 25 pounds of harvested marijuana

COMMERCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Oakland County officials discovered a marijuana grow operation Thursday at a self-storage facility that was rammed by a car.

Police said a car drove into a door at a self-storage facility in the 100 block of Benstein Road at 8:24 a.m. Thursday. Deputies arrived and found a large roll-up door at one of the units heavily damaged by a vehicle.

A police officer said he saw suspected marijuana stems and buds scattered on the ground, which he suspected were left by whoever rammed the car into the door.

Police said they entered the building and found "a large quantity of marijuana plants." The rental unit was secured and the narcotics enforcement team obtained a search warrant for the storage facility unit.

Detectives said they recovered over 25 pounds of harvested marijuana and 30 5-foot marijuana plants.

It's unknown how much marijuana was stolen by the people who rammed the car into the door because the renter of the unit refused to cooperate with police, they said.

A 33-year-old Keego Harbor man was released at the scene pending warrants, police said.

The investigation is continuing and criminal charges are pending, police said.
