LBGT community plans movie event to support marriage equality

DETROIT – Supporters of the LGBT community will come together for a fundraiser on March 27 to benefit Jayne Rowse and April DeBoer, who will go before the United State Supreme Court to present Michigan's ban on same-sex marriage this spring.

A local advocacy group, Hobos for a Cause, is helping Rowse and DeBoer raise money for their case.

"We are hosting this event because we felt as members of the LGBT community we needed to do something to support this case as they move forward," said Hobo member Stephanie Citron of Royal Oak, who has a daughter with wife Elizabeth Gardner. "After all, April and Jayne aren't just heading to the Supreme Court for their own family, but they are the voice of the all the LBGT families out there."

The event will be held at the Senate Theater in Detroit with a showing of Mommie Dearest. Doors open at 7 p.m., with guests will watch the movie with special guest Jacqueline Frost.

Guests are encouraged to dress as their favorite box office star or come as they are.

Popcorn, beer, win, cocktails and other beverages will be available.

Tickets are $20, with $15 going to the National Marriage Challenge.

"Please support our case and this important cause so that our legal team can present the most persuasive and comprehensive case possible to the justices of the United States Supreme Court," said attorney for Rowse and DeBoer, Dana Nessel.

"We are just a middle class family doing the best we can for our children and for the hundreds of thousands of families like ours across the nation," DeBoer said. "With hard work, we hope our case will allow marriage equality for all 50 states, but we can't do it alone."
