Lenox Township man charged with animal cruelty

Macomb County Sheriff's Office says dead cats, dog remains found inside home

Robert Denys

LENOX TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 60-year-old Macomb County man faces an animal cruelty charge after Sheriff's deputies found dead animals at his Lenox Township home.

Deputies went to Robert Denys' home in the 63000 block of Gratiot Avenue on Feb. 21 after complaints about animal cruelty. Denys wasn't home when deputies arrived. The Sheriff's Office says the deputies entered for a welfare check after they saw animals inside the home, which clearly had no electricity or heat.

They found garbage and animal waste throughout the home. They also found four dead cats and skeletal remains of what is believed to be a dog in an upstairs bedroom. The Macomb County Animal Division was called to remove a horse, a sheep, a German Shepherd and multiple cats from the home.

Denys arrived home while deputies were still inside the house. The Sheriff's Office says he explained to deputies that there hadn't been heat in the home for more than a month. He was aware of the dead animals and planned to bury them, but the ground was frozen. He was waiting for it to thaw.

Denys was arrested and charged with animal abandonment/cruelty. He was released on a $10,000 personal bond and is scheduled to be in court March 4.
