Downtown Birmingham’s The Bird & The Bread proves Happy Hour is a time for all ages with two distinct evenings that appeal to clientele from kiddies to adults. Owner Kristin Jonna has established B&B Family Nights from 5-7 p.m. on Mondays with a list of kiddie cocktails, that are of course alcohol free. The Bird & The Bread already serves happy hour specials every weekday from 3-6 p.m. but on Thursdays, Jonna has added a second round of specials from 9 p.m. to midnight. All of this comes just in time for visitors to enjoy the brand new summer menus, and an expanded opportunity to enjoy brunch. Brunch will extend from Sunday to Saturday and Sunday beginning July 26.
B&B FAMILY NIGHTS: From 5-7 p.m. bring the kids to enjoy the following kiddie cocktails for $3:
· Electric Lemonade: Blueberry Juice, lemonade and fresh blueberries.
· Monkey Business: Banana nectar, cherry syrup and soda water.
· The AOK Cocktail: Apricot and orange juices and lemon-lime soda.
ADULT HAPPY HOUR: Leave the little ones safely supervised and tucked in bed and enjoy a second round of half-off happy hour specials 9 p.m. to midnight Thursdays including:
· $5 wines by the glass or specialty cocktails, as well as the chance to Craft Your Own Spritz with Prosecco and lemon and a choice of strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, peach or pear liqueur.
· Half-off a rotating selection of craft beer. Options have included $2.50 for Birmingham’s own Griffin Claw El Rojo or Victory Prima Pilsner or $3 for Right Brain CEO Stout or Blanche de Bruxelles Witbier.
· Half-off a rotating selection of shareworthy pizza, sliders and appetizers ranging from $8-$9.
NEW SUMMER MENU: Visit The Bird & The Bread anytime and try an item from the brand new summer lunch or dinner menu. Every item is crafted in-house with fresh ingredients - and they pair perfectly with beverages from the wine, beer or cocktail list as well. Owner Kristin Jonna put together some suggested pairings based around the new offerings.
You tried them at Happy Hour but returned to have them for lunch – the Salmon Sliders with caper aioli, arugula, red onion jam on brioche buns pair with Barone Fini Pinot Grigio. “The richer style, weight and creaminess go well with this dish,” said Jonna. For those who love a club, the B&B Club offers a rotisserie chicken salad with duck bacon, tomato jam, spicy greens and tarragon aioli works with a red like Emilio Moro Finca Resalso Tempranillo. For a sweet bite, the Flourless Chocolate Ding Dong is a nod to the past made with almond crunch, fresh raspberries and crème anglaise that goes great with a Michigan craft beer like Right Brain’s CEO Stout, rich with chocolate, coffee and caramel notes.
At dinner time the options abound. Begin with Summer Corn Soup of coconut milk, charred corn and basil salsa, and pair with a Seven Falls Chardonnay. The oak and roasted notes will enhance the dish. Try the Brisket and Brioche appetizer, beef brisket sliders with fontina cheese, tomato basil and au jus, with a BenMarco Malbec, its rich texture and dense black currant flavors that play with the tomato conserve in the dish. Meanwhile the Code Escabeche with red pepper salad, picked onions, white bean puree and green pepper romesco offers an opportunity to pair a Spanish dish with a Spanish wine, the Avancia Cuvee de O Godello, with a citrus quality and briny qualities of the sea that pair against the pickling flavors in the dish.
As of July 26, The Bird & The Bread serves brunch 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdayand Sunday as well as lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday-Friday, and dinner from 5-10 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 5-9 p.m. Sunday. Limited menu items are available 10 p.m. to midnight Friday-Saturday.

The Bird & The Bread welcomes home Michigan native, winemaker with Kendall-Jackson Wine Dinner
WHAT: The Bird & The Bread, a Birmingham-based restaurant with a dedication to locally-derived food and drinks, will host its first Master Winemaker Dinner with Kendall Jackson Family Wines in the ELM Room this month. The event offers a chance to showcase some of the brand’s finest offerings made over the last several years and marks a homecoming for its winemaker.
WHO: Kendall-Jackson Winemaker since 2006, Matt Smith has been with the company for 10 years and oversees wine production at Vinwood Cellars and is winemaking director for all Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel, Cabernet, Merlot and Red wine blends at Kendall-Jackson. He is a Grosse Point Park native and graduate of the University of Michigan who now resides in the San Francisco Bay area.
