It's one of the fastest growing businesses in our state: craft beer brewing. And while you may think it's only something men enjoy, there's a unique group of women who are getting in on the action.
They're called "Fermenta: Michigan Women's Craft Collective."
Stacey Roth has been working in Michigan breweries for 12 years. She's currently the director of cellar and packaging at Griffin Claw Brewing Company in Birmingham. She works alongside Angie Williams to manage fermentation processes.
"I like being physically exhausted and dirty at the end of the day," Roth said.
Griffin Claw's mash filter, a way to extract sugar from grain, is the smallest in North America. The same type of filter is in other major breweries like Miller, Budweiser and Coors.
"It can be dirty, it can be fun, it can be intense. I am covered in spent grain, so I'm absolutely dirty right now. You go home most days absolutely stinking," Williams said. But that's why they love their jobs and want to help others appreciate the craft, too.
Fermenta is a trade organization for women who are in the beer industry, cider, mead, distilling ... anything alcohol related. One of its members, Annette May is the only certified woman Cicerone in the Michigan. A Cicerone is a trained expert in beer service.
"Come in, meet those of us who are working in the industry and ask questions. If you want to get involved, we will find a place for you," Williams said.
Of course, at the end of the day, the best part of working in a brewery is tasting the fruit of their labor by enjoying a pint.

Fermenta will be hosting a membership event at WhichCraft Taproom in Midland, Mich.
