The Gilmore Car Museum is located in Hickory Corners, Mich., about a 20 minute drive off of I-94 near Kalamazoo.
Kalamazoo is known as "The Other Motor City" because they had 17 different auto manufacturers over time, including the Checker Cab Company -- where every single one was made in Kalamazoo.
The first thing you will notice as you drive up to the entrance: this isn't your normal auto museum. The setting is in the country, on 90 acres. You walk from building to building, barn to barn. You can visit the 1941 Blue Moon Diner and a recreation of a 1930s Shell Gas Station.
They have one of the most impressive collections of classic automobiles in the country.
They have cars of the 1890s, all the way to the classics of the 1950s, and 1960s. You will see cars you've never heard of, and some you've only read about or seen in movies ... literally. They have a Tucker and the 1930 Rolls-Royce Sedanca Deville used in the Disney movie The Gnome-Mobile.
The best thing about the Gilmore is that the cars are not roped off. They encourage you to get right up close and "feel the history."
