LIVONIA, Mich. – In what the Livonia Public Schools district is calling two separate cases of misconduct, it has suspended two high school teachers and plans to file tenure charges with the state tenure commission.
David Adkins has been with the district 20 years and taught high school classes at the Livonia Career Technical Center. Kelly Graham is a gym teacher at Stevenson High School. She has been with the district for 27 years and in 2013 led the girls volleyball team to the state quarterfinals.
"She brought us together. She was a really good coach," said Lindsey Gallagher, a student at Stevenson High School. "She was a great teacher, too."
Both teachers are on paid suspension. The district says it can't say why these teachers are gone because of confidentiality. However, a spokeswoman offered this statement:
"These matters are never easy, but we are following the process that is set forth in state law, pertaining to filing tenure charges in both cases, which are not related."
Students and teachers have heard rumors about what happened but no one seems to know for sure.
The school board voted unanimously Monday to move on the suspensions, although Local 4 has learned Graham has been gone since the start of the new semester in February.
As for criminal charges, Livonia police said they have no ongoing investigations involving either teacher.
