DETROIT – The Local 4 Defenders are learning more about the competency exam for Joe Gentz, which will determine if he's fit to stand trial in the murder of Jane Bashara.
The Grosse Pointe Park mother was found dead Jan. 25 in the back of her SUV, which was parked in a Detroit ally.
Gentz is charged with murder and conspiracy in her death. Sources close to the investigation said Gentz has told investigators he killed Bashara, but under the order of her husband, Bob.
The Defenders have learned that there are verbal and written portions to the exam, which typically takes about an hour.
Local 4 legal expert, attorney Todd Flodd, said the exam will be aimed at testing Gentz's ability and capacity to understand his surroundings. Flood also said the exam could include testing to determine is Gentz has any mental conditions that could affect his responsibility for his alleged actions.
The exams usually take weeks to schedule, but Gentz's attorney told Local 4 that Gentz's is on a fast track to be tested soon.
Gentz isn't due back in court until May.
