DETROIT - The salaries and benefits for Detroit Mayor Dave Bing and City Council members will continue when Michigan's new emergency financial manager law takes effect Thursday under an order signed by Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr.
According to his Tuesday news release, Orr signed the order Monday evening after meeting with Bing and City Council members.
"Detroiters need their elected representatives on the job and working collaboratively toward the solutions that will solve our immediate financial crisis and position the city to grow and thrive," Orr said in the news release. "I wanted the first order issued to reaffirm how important the mayor and City Council members are to Detroit's turnaround."
It's the first move Orr has made as Detroit's emergency financial manager.
Under PA 436, the salaries and benefits are eliminated for all elected officials of a municipality in which a financial emergency manager has been appointed unless they are restored by order of the emergency manager.
Section 13 of PA 436 gives the emergency manger authority to set, amend or eliminate any salary, wages, other compensation or benefits of the mayor and City Council during the time that the city is under an emergency financial manager.
The emergency financial manager may modify, rescind or replace this order at any time.
