2 men charged in shooting death of 16-year-old Detroit girl

Devin Brown, 21, charged with manslaughter for shooting Sunday on city's west side

DETROIT – A second man has been charged in the shooting death of a 16-year-old girl.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy first said Wednesday that 21-year-old Devin Taylor Brown faces manslaughter and gun charges. Now, a second man, 18-year-old Kermil Smith, of Detroit, has been charged with accessory after the fact, obstruction of justice and lying to a police office.

Brown is accused of firing a single shot that hit the girl in the chest on Sunday at a home on Oakman Boulevard. Smith is accused of being at the house when the shooting happened and then lying to police when they arrived at the home. Moreover, he is accused of hiding the handgun in the shooting.

Police said the victim's 4-year-old brother witnessed the shooting but has since been taken into protective custody.

Worthy referred to Brown as a "friend" of the victim.

Brown's preliminary hearing is set for Oct. 24.
