Boy found alone at Detroit restaurant reunited with mother

5-year-old boy found Monday morning at Aloha Coney Cafe

DETROIT – A 5-year-old boy was found unattended on Monday morning at Aloha Coney Café in Detroit.

The café is located on Gratiot and Conner. The child said he is 5 years old and that his name is Jason Banks.

Authorities believe that his parents did not know he was missing, but police later sent him home with his mother and grandmother.

"Jason was put to bed by grandma around 9 p.m. Sunday night," said Officer Robert Kane, of Detroit Police's Special Victim's unit. "But he wanted to go home, to his mom's home, so he got up in the middle of the night, put on his sister's clothes, unlocked the front door and left with his toy golf clubs."

Both his mother and grandmother were questioned by officers. No charges are expected.

"He's never done this before, never," said Jewel Banks, Jason's mother. "He was visiting with my mom and staying the night to give me a break because today is my birthday but I am just thanking god he's OK."

Police say the coney is more than a mile from Jason's grandmother's home.

"Grandma lives at McClellan and Harper and he was found at Aloha Coney Island on Gratiot at Conner, that's over a mile away," said Officer Kane.
