Hamtramck neighborhood bar catches on fire

Hippo's in Hamtramck damaged by fire that started in garage

DETROIT – A fire in Hamtramck took away a lot of memories at one long standing bar.

Hippo's in Hamtramck was closed Sunday night when the fire started so no one got hurt.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, but fire investigators believe it started in a garage behind the building.

"The wires after the wind or something hit the garage and it just ignited," said John "Hippo" Hypnarowicz who opened the bar in 1990.

A quarter of a century is a long time to be part of any community.

"You wouldn't believe how many people came by today. I had the mayor here today, just friends, my phone has been ringing off the hook," said Hypnarowicz.

Because Hippo's is a big part of the neighborhood everyone is asking the same question.

Will they rebuild?

"We're going to rebuild," reassured Hypnarowicz. "Hippo's will be back."
